Educational Information
Tanystropheus is a bizarre extinct reptile that is only distantly related to dinosaurs. Fossils of this extraordinary creature are known from Triassic-aged rocks exposed in southern Europe, the Middle East, and China. At that time, these areas were covered by shallow seas bordered by warm, subtropical coastlines. The neck of Tanystropheus contained only 12 bones, but was as long as the rest of the body and tail put together! The animal probably sat on shore, extending its lengthy neck into the water and seizing fishes and squid-like invertebrates in its toothy jaws.
