Educational Information
The first skeleton of this dinosaur ever discovered was found atop a nest of eggs thought to belong to the small plant-eater Protoceratops. As a result, the new dinosaur was named Oviraptor, which means “egg thief”. But in 1993, a supposed “Protoceratops” egg was found with an Oviraptor-like baby inside, proving that these kinds of eggs actually belonged to Oviraptor, not Protoceratops. Thanks to this discovery, scientists now think that Oviraptor may be misnamed. It probably didn’t steal eggs – just the opposite, it took care of them!
