Educational Information
Amargasaurus is a sauropod (long-necked plant-eating dinosaur) that lived in what is now the Patagonia region of Argentina about 125 million years ago. It is the latest-surviving member of a peculiar group of elephant-sized sauropods called dicraeosaurids, the bones of which have so far been found only in South America and Africa. Uniquely among dinosaurs, the neck and back of Amargasaurus sported a double row of very tall spines that may have been used for display. Exactly what these spines may have supported – a pair of thin skin sails, a large hump, or some other structure – remains a puzzle to scientists.
