Educational Information
Scientists have estimated that Apatosaurus weighed five times as much as an average bull elephant. Imagine how the ground must have shaken when this giant walked by! The long neck of Apatosaurus may have allowed this dinosaur to browse both in tall trees and on low-growing vegetation. To fuel its gigantic body, it needed to eat great quantities of plants every day. Apatosaurus is sometimes incorrectly called Brontosaurus. Over 130 years ago, both of these names were given to what was later shown to be the same kind of dinosaur. Because the name Apatosaurus was coined first, it is the one we use today.
