Belugas change colors as they grow.Adult belugas are pure white. But a newborn beluga is pale gray and then turns dark blue or brown after a month. As the baby grows, its color fades. By its third birthday, the young whale turns pale gray again. It won’t turn white until it’s six. Scientists use these color changes to estimate the age of individuals in a herd.
