Certainly one of the best-known names among WWII aces. Charles Elwood "Chuck" Yeager made "ace in a day" by shooting down five German aircraft in one mission. His North American P-51D carried the name "Glamorous Glen", for his eventual wife, Glennis. Shot down over France in March 1944, Yeager escaped to Spain with help from the French Resistance and made his way back to England to fly again. Yeager served the USAF for decades, eventually rising to Brigadier General.
