P-47D Thunderbolt 56th FG. 61st FS,
Flying in his Republic P-47D with the fuselage markings "HV-A", Francis "Gabby" Gabreski scored his first victory against an Fw 190 over France in August 1943. By July 1944, his total stood at 28, more than any US pilot against the Luftwaffe. With his 300 combat hours up and flying "one last mission", he crash-landed in Bassenheim, Germany on July 20th 1944. He was captured and sent to Luft Stalag 1 until it was liberated by the Russians in April of 1945.
